Stand in Line Gallery in Nicosia is presenting the first solo exhibition in Cyprus by Greek visual artist Nikos Moschos, titled Raw Materials, opening on November 15.
Art historian Giorgos Mylonas observes that Moschos’ entire body of work “balances between the metaphysical and the real. It is complex yet sincere, subjective but never egocentric. His compositions are not ‘easy to digest’ and are not intended for the hurried viewer. Reading his work requires time, calmness, and focus; his language is full, rich, and distinctive, and often demands interpretive engagement from the viewer.”
References to ancient Greek sculpture, Baroque art, Expressionism (with the distortions of Francis Bacon), and Neue Sachlichkeit (Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, George Grosz), as well as comics, cinema, and Dadaist kinetic machines, enrich Moschos’ personal idiom without dominating it. The painter metabolizes all of these into a chromatic and stylistic language defined by movement, fluidity, and a constant alternation of states, human experiences, and emotions.
Flexible order, acrylic on canvas, 2024
